What to know about thalis

Choose a thali by diameter, weight and rim. The diameter decides how many katoris fit on the plate. A heavier thali is thicker metal, and dents less in daily service. A raised rim holds gravy; a flat edge suits pooja and display. Kansa is the traditional metal to eat from, but it is brittle and can crack if dropped. Brass takes a brighter polish and stands up to knocks. For a restaurant, fix one size and finish, and reorder the same code for replacements.

Used for

  • Thali meals in restaurants, hotels and canteens
  • Daily meals at home, in brass, copper or kansa
  • Dinner sets for weddings and trousseau
  • Pooja and aarti (the plain, print and swastik thalis)
