Brass and copper urlis

An urli, or uruli, is a wide, shallow, round vessel from the kitchens of Kerala. It was used for daily cooking and Ayurvedic preparations, and the largest, the varpu, for feasts. Today it is most often filled with water and floating flowers, in hotel lobbies, homes and at weddings.

What to know about urlis

Choose an urli by diameter, depth and base. A display urli must sit flat and hold water without spilling. Nakshi (engraved) and elephant designs suit lobbies and entrances; the plain standard urli suits homes. An urli used for cooking needs kalai inside. For events, order matching sizes to group together. Standing water marks brass, so empty, dry and polish an urli between uses.
