Buying brass, copper and kansa utensils in bulk: a checklist

Written by Hastimal Valchand LLP from the sources listed below, every claim checked against its source · Updated

The short answer

Specify every line by product code, size and quantity. Ask each supplier for the weight per size, the finish, and whether cooking vessels come tinned, then compare quotes on the same specification. Brass and copper utensils fall under HSN heading 7418, taxed at 5% GST since 22 September 2025.

The whole catalogue

01Write the specification

  • Product code and size for every line. On this site every product has a code, and every size its own code (for example HV239).
  • Quantity per size.
  • Metal and finish: polished, matte, hammered, etched or nakshi.
  • Kalai (tin lining) for anything that will cook or store food.
  • Weight per size, or the gauge of the sheet.
  • Capacity in litres or millilitres for bottles, jugs and pots.
  • Branding, engraving and gift boxes, if any, with your artwork.

02Compare quotes like for like

Metal prices move, and two vessels that look alike can differ in gauge and weight. Ask every supplier for the weight per size.

Then compare the price per piece and the price per kilogram on the same specification. A cheaper quote for a lighter piece is not cheaper.

Check whether each quote includes GST, tinning, packing and freight.

03Check the goods on arrival

  • Weigh a sample of each size against the quoted weight.
  • Fill bottles and jugs to check capacity, and turn them over to check for leaks.
  • Check kalai on cooking vessels: bright, even, with no base metal showing.
  • Check joints, handles and lids, and that sizes nest or stack as expected.
  • Tap kansa pieces: a clear ring means no hidden crack.
  • Run the magnet check on a few pieces from each lot.

04HSN code and GST

Brass, copper and kansa utensils fall under HSN heading 7418: “table, kitchen or other household articles of copper; utensils”. Brass and kansa are copper alloys, classed with copper.

CBIC's Notification No. 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) lists heading 7418 in Schedule I from 22 September 2025. That is 2.5% central tax plus 2.5% state tax: 5% GST in all.

Spoons, ladles and similar tableware fall under heading 8215, which the same notification taxes at a higher rate. Rates change, so check the HSN code and rate on each quotation and invoice.

05Plan for the seasons

Gifting demand for brass, copper and kansa peaks before Diwali and Dhanteras and through the wedding season. Order festival and gifting stock early, and keep core kitchen sizes in steady supply.

06Send one enquiry for the whole list

On this site, tick the sizes you need on each product page and add them to your enquiry list. Send the list by the form, WhatsApp or phone, or paste a list of codes and quantities.

Every enquiry carries product names and codes, so the quotation comes back against your exact list. Prices are quoted by weight or by piece.
