An idli pot is a steamer. Water boils in the base, and the batter sits in the pits of perforated plates stacked above it, under a lid. Sellers often call the brass version an idli pathram. HV157 is our small idli pot, size 16; the big one is HV158.
It makes idlis for breakfast at home, and the plates also steam dhokla and other batters. Small tiffin rooms and cafés use idli pots alongside their dosa tawas.
Brass needs kalai (a tin lining) inside before any cooking; sour and salty food react with the bare metal. Your quotation confirms whether the piece comes tinned.
Also called idli pathram, brass idli cooker, idli patra.
