01Where the market is
Bhuleshwar and Kalbadevi sit side by side in South Mumbai, next to Girgaon. Both are old trading districts, and utensils are among Kalbadevi's trades.
The utensil shops run through both areas and out along Thakurdwar Road (Dr Babasaheb Jaykar Marg). There is no single market building: the trade is a run of shops along the streets and lanes.
02Getting there
- Western line: Charni Road, then a walk of about ten minutes east into Thakurdwar and Bhuleshwar. Marine Lines is a similar walk.
- Central line: Sandhurst Road or Masjid, about fifteen minutes on foot.
- The lanes are narrow and busy on weekdays. A train and a short walk, or a taxi to the Thakurdwar Road end, is easier than driving.
- For our shop, the contact page has the map and directions.
03What the shops sell
Cooking vessels (tope, deg, handi, kadhai, parat), tableware (thalis, katoris, glasses), pooja ware (kalash, lota, diya, aarti thali), wedding sets and gifts, in brass, copper, kansa and steel.
Some shops sell mainly to the trade, some mainly to families, and many to both. You can buy a single piece or a full kitchen.
04How buying works here
- Plain vessels are often sold by weight, at a rate per kg; finished and decorated pieces by the piece. Ask which, and ask the weight.
- For cooking pots, ask whether the inside is tinned (kalai) and whether that is in the price.
- Write down the size and code of anything you may reorder, so the next order matches.
- Bring a magnet: brass, copper and kansa are not magnetic, so a firm pull means steel underneath.
