About this product

A supda (supa, soop) is a winnowing fan: the scoop-shaped tray used to toss and clean grain. The everyday one is woven from reed or cane. HV43 is a brass supda, made for ceremony rather than the threshing floor.

The supa has a place in Maharashtrian weddings. By old custom, rattling the supa marks that the marriage rites are complete. In pooja and wedding rituals a brass supda holds rice, grain or offerings.

Wash and dry it after use, and polish with tamarind or lemon when the brass darkens.

Also called supa, soop, supli, sup.
